Air Conditioning Repairs in Grafton

Not cooling, leaking, tripping or making a noise it did not used to make.

When a system stops working properly, the useful thing is a correct diagnosis rather than a guess. A lot of “it needs a re-gas” jobs are actually a dirty coil, a failed capacitor or a blocked drain — and a system that genuinely is low on refrigerant has a leak, which means adding gas without finding the leak is money poured into the atmosphere.

The common faults, and what they usually mean

SymptomUsually caused by
Running but not coolingDirty coil or filters, failed capacitor, faulty fan, or a genuine refrigerant leak
Water dripping from the indoor unitBlocked condensate drain — very common here, and usually a straightforward fix
Tripping the breaker or RCDAn electrical fault in the unit, or a circuit that was never adequate. Do not keep resetting it
Ice on the pipework or coilRestricted airflow or low refrigerant charge. Turn it off — running it iced up causes damage
Musty smellMould in the indoor unit. Needs a proper clean, not an air freshener
New rattling or grindingFan bearing, loose mounting, or something caught in the fan. Worth checking early
Outdoor unit not startingCapacitor is the most common culprit, and it is an inexpensive part

On re-gassing

A sealed refrigeration system does not consume refrigerant. If yours is low, it has leaked, and it will leak again.

Anyone who tops your system up without looking for the leak is selling you a few months. Worse, refrigerant release is a genuine environmental problem and handling it at all requires an ARCtick licence — which we holds.

The right sequence is find the leak, price the repair honestly, and then have a straight conversation about whether repairing an older unit is worth it against replacing it. On a fifteen-year-old system with a leaking evaporator, replacement is often the better answer, and we will say so.

Frequently asked questions

My air conditioner is not cooling. What is wrong?

It could be a dirty coil, a failed capacitor, a fan fault or a refrigerant leak. Check and clean your filters first — that genuinely fixes a fair proportion of calls. If that does not do it, it needs diagnosing properly.

Why is water dripping from my indoor unit?

Almost always a blocked condensate drain. It is common in this climate and usually a straightforward fix, but leaving it can damage your ceiling or wall.

Does my system need a re-gas?

If it is low on refrigerant it has a leak — sealed systems do not consume gas. Topping it up without finding the leak just delays the problem. We find the leak first.

My air conditioner keeps tripping the safety switch. Can I keep resetting it?

No. A repeated trip means something is genuinely faulty and the safety switch is doing its job. Leave it off and get it looked at.

Is it worth repairing an old unit?

Depends on the fault and the age. Capacitors and fan motors are usually worth fixing. A compressor failure or major leak on a unit over ten to twelve years old usually is not. We will give you the honest numbers.

Byron Ryder and his team at Ryder Air and Electrical are straight up brilliant. I have had two jobs done by Byron, and both were carried out perfectly. Our farm is 35km out of Grafton and Byron didn't have any problem both times in sorting it out for us.
