A ceiling fan costs a few cents a day to run and makes a room feel several degrees cooler through moving air. This is the part worth understanding, because it saves money every single day of summer.
A fan does not cool a room. It cools you, by moving air across your skin. That means a room at twenty-five degrees with a fan running feels about the same as a room at twenty-two without one.
So when you run a fan alongside your air conditioner, you can lift the thermostat setpoint a couple of degrees for identical comfort. Every degree you raise the setpoint reduces what the compressor has to do, and the fan costs almost nothing by comparison. Over a Grafton summer that is a genuine, ongoing saving.
The one rule: a fan only helps someone who is in the room. Turn it off when you leave — unlike an air conditioner, it is not cooling the space.
Choosing a fan
- Blade span for the room. A larger span moves more air at lower speed, which means less noise. Undersized fans have to spin fast to move air, and fast means noisy.
- DC motors cost more and are worth it — substantially quieter, more efficient, more speed steps, and usually remote controlled.

- Outdoor rated for verandahs. Standard indoor fans corrode and fail outdoors, and coastal properties need genuinely marine-grade fittings.
- Light or no light. A fan with an integrated light is convenient but the light quality is often mediocre. If the room needs good light, separate fittings usually do better.
- Reverse function for winter — running slowly in reverse pushes warm air down off the ceiling. Genuinely useful in high-ceilinged Grafton homes.
