A safety switch — an RCD — is the single most important protective device in a house. It monitors the current flowing out against the current coming back, and if it detects a difference of around 30 milliamps it disconnects the circuit in a fraction of a second. That is what stops a shock from becoming an electrocution. Circuit breakers and fuses do not do this.

Do you actually have one?
A surprising number of people are certain they have safety switches and do not. Here is how to check in under a minute.
Open your switchboard cover and look for small buttons marked T or TEST on the devices. If there are no test buttons anywhere on the board, you have no RCD protection at all.
If you do have them, press the test button on each one. The RCD should trip immediately and cut power to its circuits. If it does not trip, it has failed and it needs replacing — a failed RCD sitting in a board looks exactly like a working one.
Do this every three months. It takes two minutes and it is the only way to know the device will actually work when it matters. Remember to reset everything and check your clocks afterwards.
Not every circuit is covered
The common and dangerous assumption is that having one safety switch means the whole house is protected. Often it is not.
Many older installations had an RCD added to power point circuits only, leaving lighting, the oven, the hot water system and the air conditioning unprotected. That matters, because changing a light fitting, working on an oven or touching a faulty outdoor light are all situations where you would want that protection.
When we test, we identify which circuits are actually protected and which are not, and tell you plainly. Extending RCD protection across the remaining circuits is usually straightforward and inexpensive relative to what it does.

What is the difference between a circuit breaker and a safety switch?
A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuit. A safety switch (RCD) detects current leaking to earth — including through a person — and disconnects in a fraction of a second. You need both; they do different jobs.
How do I test my safety switch?
Press the T or TEST button on the device. It should trip immediately. Do this every three months. If it does not trip, it has failed and needs replacing.
Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
Something on that circuit is leaking current to earth — often a faulty appliance or moisture, especially after heavy rain. Unplug everything, reset, and reintroduce items one at a time to find the culprit.
Do I have safety switches?
Open your switchboard and look for test buttons. No test buttons means no RCD protection. Having one does not mean every circuit is covered — many older installations protect power points only.
Are safety switches required in rental properties?
Landlord obligations for electrical safety apply and RCD protection is a basic duty of care to tenants. If you are unsure what your rental has, get it tested and documented.
