Why halogens are worth removing
Running cost. Twenty halogens at fifty watts is a kilowatt of lighting. The LED equivalent is under two hundred watts for the same light output.
Heat in the ceiling. This is the part people underestimate. Halogens run genuinely hot, and all that heat goes into your roof space and radiates back down. In summer your air conditioning is fighting your lighting.
Insulation clearance. Because halogens run hot, they require clearance from insulation — which is why so many homes with halogen downlights have gaps cut in the ceiling insulation around every fitting. The result is a ceiling that leaks heat in summer and warmth in winter. Many modern LED fittings are rated to be covered by insulation, which lets you close those gaps and get your insulation working properly.
Lamp life. Halogens fail regularly. Quality LEDs last years, which matters if your ceilings are high.
Choosing well
Not all LEDs are equal, and cheap ones are the reason some people think LED light looks bad.
- Colour temperature — 3000K warm white for living and bedrooms, 4000K for kitchens and workspaces. Some fittings are switchable, which is genuinely useful.
- Colour rendering (CRI) — look for 80 or above, ideally 90+ in kitchens and bathrooms. Low CRI is why food and skin look wrong under bad LEDs.
- Beam angle — narrow beams create pools and scallops on walls; wider beams give more even coverage. This determines how many you need.
- Dimmable, and matched to the dimmer — if you want dimming, the lamp and dimmer must be compatible or you will get flicker and buzz.
- IC or IC-4 rated if you want insulation to cover them.
- Quality driver — the driver is what usually fails, not the LED. This is where cheap fittings cut corners.

What is CRI and does it matter?
