Your consumer mains are the cable running from the point of supply to your main switchboard. How to tell your mains are undersized
The symptoms are easy to misread as a switchboard problem or an appliance problem.
- Lights dim noticeably when the air conditioner or a big motor starts
- The main switch trips when several large appliances run together, even though no individual circuit is faulty
- An electrician has told you there is no capacity to add what you want
- You are on a small single-phase service and have added air conditioning, a pool, a shed or an EV since it was installed
- The mains cable is visibly old — original fabric or early PVC insulation, particularly on pre-1970s homes
That last one matters for safety as well as capacity. Old mains insulation degrades, and a fault on the mains is upstream of your switchboard protection.
What an upgrade actually involves
It is a coordinated job rather than a cable swap.
- Load assessment. What you run now, and honestly, what you will run in ten years.
- Point of attachment check. Often the attachment point needs upgrading or relocating at the same time.
- Cable sizing. For the load and the run length, with headroom.
- Supply outage. We coordinate the disconnection and reconnection — usually a few hours, and we tell you the window in advance.
- Switchboard. Very often makes sense to do at the same time, because you are already off supply and much of the labour overlaps.
- Lodgement. Notification of Service Work to Essential Energy, plus a CCEW.
