Whether your house suits ducted

Three things decide it, and they get checked before we quote.

Roof space. The indoor fan coil unit needs somewhere to live with room around it, and the ductwork needs a path to every outlet without being crushed or kinked. Low-pitch roofs, split-level homes and cathedral ceilings all make this harder. Grafton's high-set timber homes are often surprisingly good; Maclean's split-levels often are not.

Electrical supply. A ducted system pulls considerably more than a split. Plenty of older Grafton homes are on a service and a switchboard that simply cannot carry it. That does not necessarily kill the idea — a mains upgrade is Level 2 work we do ourselves — but it needs to be in the budget from day one rather than discovered at install.

How you live. If you genuinely use two rooms, ducted is an expensive way to cool them. Zoning helps a great deal, but a ducted system still runs a much larger compressor than a split. Be honest about the house you actually live in.

Zoning is what makes it worth having

An unzoned ducted system conditions the whole house whenever it runs, including the four bedrooms nobody is in. That is where the reputation for expensive running costs comes from.

Zoning splits the house into separately controlled areas — typically living, bedrooms, and sometimes a third zone for a rumpus or office — so you condition what you are using. On a typical Grafton family home, running two zones instead of five is a very large difference in running cost, every day, for the life of the system.

Zone layout is a design decision worth getting right. Group rooms by how they are used and when, not by where they happen to sit on the floor plan. Bedrooms at night, living during the day.
