Connecting a property to the electricity network for the first time is Level 2 ASP work — a general electrician cannot legally do it. We handle our part of it — the physical connection, the point of attachment, the consumer mains and the lodgement with Essential Energy. In town, underground is usually worth the extra if the budget allows. On rural blocks with long runs it becomes a genuine cost decision — though if machinery clearance or bushfire risk is in play, underground often wins on merit rather than money.
How the process actually runs
The reason new connections get delayed is almost never the physical work. It is the sequence.
- Site assessment. We look at where supply is available, where the point of attachment can go, what the mains run looks like and where metering will sit. This genuinely needs to be on site.
- Retailer and connection application. You need an electricity retailer engaged, because your retailer arranges the meter through their metering coordinator. We tell you exactly what to ask them for. This is the step that most often stalls a build.
- Physical work. The service line, point of attachment and consumer mains back to your switchboard.
- Lodgement. We submit the Notification of Service Work to Essential Energy and issue a Certificate of Compliance for the electrical work.
- Energisation. Power on.
The single most useful thing you can do. get your retailer sorted early. Talk to them as soon as you know you need a connection, not once the house is finished. We have seen completed builds sit dark for weeks purely because nobody started that conversation.

Underground looks better, survives storms and avoids machinery clearance problems, but costs more because of the trench. In town it is usually worth it; on long rural runs it becomes a real cost decision.
Can you do the switchboard and house wiring too?
Yes. We are a licensed electrical contractor as well as a Level 2 ASP, so the connection, the mains, the switchboard and the wiring can all be one job.
